If you were to scroll through the music on my phone what you would notice is all the Rap, Hip Hop and R&B artists. That surprises and shocks most people – especially the Rap. My cheesy line is “I’ve been listening to Snoop Lion since he was Snoop Doggy Dogg”. I followed the East Coast/West Coast feuds (East Coast Forever), followed all the controversy when Ice-T dropped Cop Killer, was shocked with the lyrics (but not really the anger) when I first listened to Public Enemy and NWA, remember where I was when Biggie Smalls died and am still wondering who killed Tupac. I am not going to go into the debate of how misogynistic Rap is or how it glorifies gangs and violence, I will leave that to those more educated then I.

My playlists contain very clean lyrics (so no Gangster tracks for small ears) and I’m loving J Cole, Big Sean and Shad – three very different artists. J Cole and Big Sean are huge American Rappers that you can google and find lots of information on and most likely have heard at least one of their songs on mainstream radio (usually with lots of edits because of language). Shad is a Canadian Rapper and his raps feel old school and his lyrics are complex – he raps about social issues (which is why I started listening to rap to begin with), he’s from London, Ontario, his self deprecating lyrics are refreshing, he is bilingual and the man has a Masters Degree. When I first heard “Stylin – Featuring Saukrates” on flow 93.5 I purchased the song from iTunes. Last weekend I spent a part of my Friday night watching his videos on YouTube and reading all I could about him. It’s been a long time since I’ve been moved to spend any time researching any musician/rapper/artist.

I wanted to share Shad’s Stylin video (featuring Saukrates). I would love to hear any thoughts you may have. Enjoy and have a great weekend.
