Oscar Viewing Party Decor

COLOUR PALETTE: Black and Gold

FLORALS: White Hydrangeas and Greenery

DECOR: Black linens, white crisp china, gold flatware (if you have it, if not silverware is great), stemless wineglasses

oscar viewing party

When Nicole and I were discussing the decor for the party we agreed that we were going to use what we had for serving the food and drinks. This was not about buying new dishes, stemware or platters. Hosting an Oscar Viewing Party was not going to cause unnecessary stress or debt. Nicole served the food and drinks with items she already owned – she had this beautiful orange tray (pictured above) for the drinks, a slate platter (pictured below) for the chocoterie platter, white platters and bowl for the rest of the food, and glasses we had in our cupboards. For vases we used a medium sized vase I had from home for the larger arrangement and a stemless wine glass for the smaller arrangement.

We served the Vodka Mudshakes in little milk bottles that we had from a previous project. You don’t have to use milk bottles. You can use martini glasses or champagne flutes. Use what you have in different and fun ways. If you are interested we purchased the milk bottles from a party supply store, but I have seen them in the dollar store as well.

We did purchase the black and gold napkins, black gift bags for the swag bags, gold tissue paper and the straws at a party store. I love to scrapbook so I already had the paper and fabric flowers and the black confetti. We placed the flowers and confetti on the table and orange tray to add a bit of drama to the table scape. In the above outline we called for black linens, I picked up the smaller gold ones as accent pieces and they’re great for drinks or dessert.

For the flowers Loblaws had 3 bunches for $20. We selected 2 bunches of hydrangeas and one bunch of green berries (I don’t know the technical term). Nicole and I asked for help on the arrangement and the florist told us that creating a floral arrangement with these items would be fool proof which I quickly responded with “Challenge Accepted!”. She told us to cut the flowers on an angle and keep the arrangement tight and that was it.

While Nicole was cooking I was creating the floral arrangements. We knew we needed two – a small one and a large one. I had several vases to choose from and what I quickly learned was I needed vases with a smaller openings to keep the flowers bunched – square, rectangular or cylindrical vases would not do. I didn’t have a small vase that worked so Nicole suggested I use one of the stemless wine glasses.

I used one of the leaves from hydrangea to cover the stems in the smaller arrangement because I didn’t cut the stems equal lengths and it looked funny. This makes the arrangement look more “professional” and covers my mistake.

Below is the large floral arrangement.

I created the arrangements in minutes and will be creating simple and elegant arrangements like the ones above for years to come. The florist was right – they really are fool proof.

Tomorrow we’re talking about food and drinks.

I love watching the Oscars. I think I love watching for the same reason you do – first it’s the fashion (no surprise there), all those beautiful gowns on full display for all to see; second it’s celebrating great films and the performances they inspire. Before all the kids I hosted several Oscar viewing parties with my girlfriends.

I forgot how much I enjoyed these Oscar viewing parties. Getting all my friends together so we could just enjoy each others company and enjoy all the drama of the night. I would even have an Oscar pool – you can find print outs online. When my girlfriend Nicole approached me with the idea of co-hosting an Oscar party I was all in. The best part of co-hosting a party with Nicole is that she’s an events planner and the principal of Bisou Events. She has planned events for Hudson’s Bay, TIFF and most recently Sundance with some of the biggest celebrities. Nicole already had the concept for the party and I helped her bring it to life.

Below is our Oscar Viewing Party Plan. We’re both mothers and entrepreneurs so that means limited time stretched way too thin. We’ve planned a simple and chic party that anyone could recreate with a very reasonable budget. Remember use what you have – this isn’t a make work project. For example, if you don’t like black and gold select colours you like. I’ll be posting our ideas all week and we wanted to welcome you to the party!

I’ve told you before that I have good hair – it’s thick, can hold a curl or colour, easy to style and grows fast. Now I’ve been colouring it for decades and I’m not afraid to change it up (blonde to dark brown without a flutter of fear) but all that changing it up has also caused damage to my hair. There has been a lot of breakage with my hair so it was perfect timing that I started a partnership with Sassoon Toronto.

I talked to my stylist Lorraine and colourist Kamilla and told them I was open to ALMOST anything (I’m not going pink/silver/really short). Kamilla wanted to address my breakage and told me I should go back to my roots.

So ta da…

There were several inches cut off and I had a demi-permanent colour added. This is what I learned about demi-permanent colour:

-Demi-permanent colouring is more gentle on hair, as it has no ammonia, only colour deposits.
– It adds tons of moisture and shine to hair.
– Balances out any dryness from previous colour and bleach.
– Lower maintenance – has a softer regrowth.

I am really happy with the colour. I’ll be visiting Sassoon Toronto every month and getting my hair cut/coloured/highlighted as well as the occasional blow-dry and style.

If you are looking for a new stylist check out Sassoon (I’ve linked the Toronto salon) or follow them on Instagram @SassoonToronto. We can look fabulous together.

I have been wearing a lot of winter white. I LOVE winter white. What I am coming up against is what to wear it with. I’ve been playing with my wardrobe (because I really have nothing else to do) and came up with this outfit. Winter white and pink!! I have to say I’m loving it. Pat on my back, thank you.

Yeah, the hair is sort of crazy. Just like I’ve been feeling in this month of January.

Pink Pants

Usually I dislike light pink and black together but with the winter white the combination is not too harsh.

Noize Original

Now that my kids are older I can wear a white coat and feel confident that I will be the one getting it dirty. This Noize coat keeps me warm and stylish, the best part for me is they are a Canadian company. Noize has 4 core tenants – Warmth, Faux Fur, Fashion & Value. We Canadians know how to do winter coats.
